England have asked permission to make changes to their 30-man preliminary World Cup squad, causing speculation Darren Gough could be recalled.
Gough, 36, was originally left out of the 30, after failing a fitness test.
England, who have until 13 February to reveal their 15-man squad for the Caribbean, must drop one of that 30 if they want to draft in an outsider.
"We have asked ICC about regulations and have been advised we can nominate a change of player," said a spokesman.
Gough is in Australia playing for an England veterans side in a beach cricket tournament.
England's most prolific bowler in one-day history with 235 wickets, he last played in the drawn series with Pakistan five months ago.
Marcus Trescothick, who left the Ashes tour because of a stress-related illness, was another notable omission from the 30, named last month.
