Misbah-ul-haq :(

KARACHI: Misbah-ul-Haq, the Mianwali-born batsman, imbued with so many talents, had never been given the additional blessing of a killer punch.
Twice in the World Twenty20 he brought Pakistan agonisingly close to beating India and on both occasions he fell just short of delivering the shot that would have taken his team through.
The first time, it didn’t really matter as Pakistan easily moved into the Super Eights in spite of a defeat against India in a bowl-out. But the second time — in the grand finale at the Wanderers on Monday — his inability to finish off the match broke millions of hearts in Pakistan and across the world.
Once again, he brought Pakistan back in business with a gem of an innings and once again he threw it away. Pakistan just needed six runs from the final four deliveries of an over bowled by the inexperienced Joginder Sharma. Almost all of his more orthodox shots had gone out of the field but still Misbah opted to loft the ball over wicket-keeper MS Dhoni’s head and spooned it straight to S Sreesanth at fine leg. Game over.
Misbah is no villain but the 33-year-old blew away a perfect opportunity of becoming a national hero, somebody who could be compared to the great Javed Miandad or the vastly-accomplished Wasim Akram — two of the biggest stars of Pakistan’s triumphant 1992 World Cup campaign in Australia, two match winners!
Pakistan should have won the final. This should have been their day. Everything was going right for them. Even the fact that Dhoni won the toss, a run-chase wasn’t a bad idea on a batting paradise especially after the bowlers restricted India to 157-5. But the batsmen, who played surprisingly well during the best part of the tournament, were unable to shine when it mattered the most.
Mohammad Hafeez, easily one of the most experienced twenty20 all-rounders in Pakistan, threw away his wicket and helped India make the sort of start they wanted in the match’s second innings. Imran Nazir did his bit but experienced campaigners Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik, the skipper, failed to play their roles. Both fell hitting rather careless shots and left Pakistan in deep trouble.
The worst came from Shahid Afridi, who had the dream opportunity of using his skills as a world famous pinch-hitter. He went for a first ball duck trying for a big one but only managing to hit it high and towards a fielder. Ironically, he was handed the player-of-the-tournament award, but for his performance as a bowler.
In the end, Team Pakistan once again showed that it still has a long way to go. After beating top class teams like Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand, one was expecting the Greenshirts to conquer India as well. But like Misbah, Team Pakistan also fell short just by five runs. What a heartbreak

Pakistan crush Scotland to gain their first victory

Shahid Afridi-Man of the matchICC World Twenty20 Group D, Durban: Pakistan 171-9 (20 overs) bt Scotland 120 (19.3 overs) by 51 runs.
Here are the Live Scores Pakistan Vs Scotland

The first match of the group D was played between Pakistan and Scotland which Pakistan won comfortably by 51 runs. Scotland won the toss and decided to field first. The conditions looked great for cricket, Sunny blue sky and little bit of wind across made it a perfect cricketing day.

Imran nazir and Salman butt (V.c) opened the batting for Pakistan. Both of the openers didn't look impressive at all. Scots opening bowlers did really well by restricting the Paki openers, who feared playing attackive cricket even in the first six power-play restricted overs. Both of the openers fell victim of Blain and scorecard looked like 24/2.

Pakistani batsmen didn't look like playing Twenty20 cricket. Score rate was just like 6rs/over and wickets falling at regular intervals until Shahid afridi came, who stood just for 7 balls, but made a valuable 22 runs including 2 sixes and 2 four.

Scotland bowled really well and they restricted Pakistan to just 171/9 in alloted 20 overs, Which is just average from twenty20's prespective.

When Scots came onto the field for batting, they started really well and were 52/2 at a stage until Shoaib malik brought their spinners on and Scotland batsmen started threwing their wickets away.

Shahid afridi and Umer Gul fetched four wickets each whereas Asif and Muhammad Hafeez got one.

Scotland captain Ryan Watson: "I thought we bowled well up front - we looked to get wickets in the first six overs, which we did - and walking off, I thought we'd done a good job.

"But they came out and bowled really well - their spinners did a great job and in the end it proved a bit too much.

"It's great experience. We're learning all the time. Hopefully we can take what we've learnt today and put it into practice tomorrow night [against India]."

Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik: "We did not bat as well as we are capable of in this game, but I knew we had the bowling to restrict Scotland.

"There are areas like batting and fielding we have to work on, but I am confident we will do well in the tournament."

Pakistan are expected to make some changes to their batting line-up as they will catch on the cricketing superpower India. Who do you feel if Pakistan should make changes or not? Do give your opinion in the form of comments and remember to visit the blog on friday for Live Scores Pakistan Vs India here.

Newzealand thrash poor lookin Kenya

Maurice ouma-Icc world twenty20ICC World Twenty20 Group C, Durban: New Zealand 74-1 (7.4 overs) beat Kenya 73 (16.5 overs) by nine wickets
Here are the Live Scores New Zealand Vs Kenya

New zealand made their way easier to the Super-8 round of the Icc World Twenty20 by thrashing Kenya by 9 wickets.

New zealand bowlers looked a bit too much for the poor african side who was unable to recover after getting into a horrible condition of 1/4 just after they were asked to open with the bat.Six of their batsmen failed to score a single run and returned to the pavilion with a duck.

Kenya were bowled out for, the lowest total in Twenty20 International, just 73. Mark Gillespie (Man of the match) took four wickets giving just 7 runs i.e 4-7 while Shane bond, Vettori and martin took 2 wickets each.

The kiwis, in relpy, just took 7.4 overs to reach the target as peter fulton rushed towards the target by hitting two successive sixes to end the game.

Gayle's record breaker couldn't help West Indies

Gibbs-ICC world Twenty20ICC World Twenty20 Group A, Johannesburg: South Africa 208-2 (17.4 ovs) bt West Indies 205-6 (20 ovs) by 8 wkts
Here are the Live Scores-South Africa Vs West Indies-Icc World Twenty20

Chris gayle played an outstanding record breaker Innings of 117 in just 57 balls, giving the tournament a starter it deserved, But couldn't help his team earn a victory. And South Africa won the match by 8 wickets.

Southafrican start was not a perfect one. Captain Graeme Smith was hit painfully one the hand off the first ball. But the loose bowling from West Indies bowlers gave them a chance. West Indies looked really poor in the field. They slipped three catches and gave a record 23 wides in just 20 overs.

Gibbs was the Southafrican hero, who scored 90 runs with the help of 13 fours and 2 sixes.I think that the reason behind the Southafrican victory was team effort, which West Indies lacked to show. They had their innings backed on just one person Chris gayle whereas in case of South Africa, almost everybody participated in the job, therefore reaching the target at the cost of just two wickets with 14 balls to spare.

This really was a fantastic starter. And we hope to have some more excellent matches as the tournament goes further.

Records flow as the first World T20 innings come to an end

ICC World Twenty20 Group A, Johannesburg: South Africa v West Indies 205-6 (20 ovs)
Here are the Live Scores-South africa VS West Indies-World twenty20

Chris gayle, as expected, boosted West Indies to 205-6 and became the first centurion and the highest run scorer in the short history of the twenty20 cricket. The record previously belonged to the aussie captain Ricky Ponting who scored 98* against South Africa.

Gayle scored blistering 117 runs in just 57 balls after West Indies lost the toss and were asked to open with the bat in the inaugural match of the inaugural version of ICC world Twenty20.

He smashed 10 sixes, another record , and 7 fours and shared a record opening partnership with devon smith, who scored 35 runs of 34 balls.

After this Chris gayle got out, trying to pull a short-one from pollock, the other batsmen were not comfortable facing the African pace attack and got out at regulat intervals. Hence the momentum fell down.

It can be comfortably said that had it not been for gayle, The hosts would have easily been in the driving seat.
Anyways, Its still a chaseable target and we expect a fine reply from SouthAfrica too :)

Twenty20 Worldcup ready for a take-off

Twenty20 cricket is the modern and very appealing form of Cricket. Its due to its amazing popularity that ICC has decided to organize Twenty2o International Worldcup. The first ever Twenty20 worldcup, held in SouthAfrica, is going to start from today.12 teams will participate in this Worldcup which will take approximately 2-weeks before its completion. Since its start in England in 2003, Cricket's shortest form has proved spectacular due to its fast paced kind of nature.

There will be a fantastic and colorful inauguration ceremony to kick-off the things. It will be broadcasted Live on all major sports channels throughout the world at around 2:30 GMT. All of the Pakistani viewers can watch it live and exclusive at Geo Super!

Around 2 hours after the inauguration ceremony we are going to have the first and today's mainevent match between WestIndies Vs Southafrica. Southafrica ,having quite an experience in Twenty20 cricket and home advantage, is considered as second favourite behind the ODI champion Australia.

All of the teams are divided in 4 groups(A,B,C & D) with each group constituting 3 teams. The top 2 teams from each group will take it over to the next round. The top eight teams in the 2nd round will be divided into two groups, where top two from each group will make it to the semi-finals.

Talking about the history of Twenty20 internationals ,only 19 matches have been played so far since the first Twenty20 international in February 2005. But even then almost whole world have recognised the growing popularity of this version of cricket, therefore having domestic twenty20 cricket tournaments in Pakistan, Southafrica, WestIndies with India soon joining the list.

The team combinations have changed quite a bit for this Twenty20 when compared against the regular One day Internationals. Indian batting stars Sourav ganguly, Rahul dravid and Sachin Tandulkar are sitting out while the dashing wicket-keeper batemen Mahindra Singh Dhoni has been promoted for the job of Captain. Dhoni has an amazing strike rate of around 98 in ODIs but is yet to score a single run in twenty20 Internationals.

Australia are going into the tournament without the legendry pacemen Mc.Grath, who recently retired from International arena, and the emerging player of the year 'Shaun Tait' but the speedstar Bret Lee,Who missed the ODI worldcup due to injury, is back in action this time.

Srilanka are forced to go into the tournament without the lethal Murali ,who is suffering from injury, while the hosts have surprisingly rested their star ODI all-rounder Jacque Kallis.

England have a bunch of ODI stars plus some Twenty20 specialists but their chance in the tournament will still be hovering over Flintoff's performance and fitness.

Pakistan, on paper, look to have a great side particularly targetting the Twenty20 situations. The team will be working under the new leadership of Shoaib malik. Pakistan have quite a no. of hard hitters like Afridi and Imran Nazir which really boost their chance in thier 20 overs Worldcup. But they will surely miss their speedster Shoaib Akhtar ( ahh...really???) who is back to pakistan after creating yet another issue. He was sent back to Pakistan after he thrashed Muhammad Asif with a bat.Just like Southafrica, Pakistan has also ommited their star Batsmen and 2007 test player of the year Muhammad Yousuf, who seems to join ICL this year.

Pakistan actually have the best record in this format with 3 wins out of four matches they played, while their Faisalabad wolves are the world club champions in Twenty20 cricket.

England,Pakistan,Srilanka,Zimbabwe and Australia are amongst the number of teams with coaches participating in their first major tournaments.

Shoaib sent home after Asif row

Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar has been sent home from the World Twenty 20 after a bust-up with Mohammad Asif.

Shoaib, who was already on probation for a disciplinary breach last month, confronted team-mate Asif during practice in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Shoaib admitted to hitting Asif with a bat, causing bruising to his left thigh and prompting a team investigation.

"A decision has been taken to call back Shoaib after an initial inquiry," said Pakistan chief executive Shafqat Nagmi.

"The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) fully endorses this decision. Shoaib Akhtar will be returning on the first available flight.
"No one will be spared if he flouts the rules and team spirit. What has happened is something that has shocked us."

Shoaib Akhtar said he intended to reveal more about the explosive clash shortly. "I was provoked and I will brief the media about it when I return home. I have never hit anyone like that and I am very sorry," the 32-year-old said.

"What happened was not good but I am a human being and what can happen in a random fit of anger, is unbelievable."

Naghmi added that a detailed inquiry into the "unfortunate incident" would be held when the player returned to Pakistan.

Shoaib's actions have been condemned by a number of former Pakistan stars.

"Senior players have a responsibility in the team and what Shoaib did was sad," Aamir Sohail commented.

"Anyone behaving like this should not be in the team. His act has brought shame to the team and the nation," said former fast bowler Waqar Younis

Rameez Raja, now a cricket commentator, said both players were "the temperamental type".

But he added: "This behaviour is not acceptable. I don't see him playing in the immediate future for Pakistan.

"I don't think he will get much support from the fans as well - people seem to be tired of his tantrums."

National Aacdemy coach Aaqib Javed said Shoaib should never be picked for Pakistan again.

"There must be a life ban imposed on him because this is anincident that has embarrassed all of us and is a black mark for our cricket community," he commented.

The incident occurred just five days before Pakistan play their opening World Twenty20 fixture against Scotland.
Media manager Dr Ehsan Malik insisted Asif would be fit to start that game, saying: "Asif has a bruise on his left thigh but he has had X-rays and has been cleared. He is fine as far as I know."

But Shoaib's future as an international cricketer could now be in doubt.

The 32-year-old was looking to relaunch his career after 16 months in which he has played just one Test and four one-dayers, mainly due to fitness problems.

He has been dogged by controversy for much of his career, and was banned for two years after failing a drugs test last October before having the suspension lifted on appeal.

Asif was also handed a reprieve after receiving a one-year ban for a similar offence.

Last month he was fined for leaving a training camp in Karachi without asking permission, though the penalty was suspended for two months and the bowler placed on a six-week probationary period, again on appeal.

Now we play on good batting tracks all the time, they've made laws about bouncers and free hits for a no-ball

Shoaib Akhtar

Shoaib also courted controversy on Thursday when he hit out at cricket's administrators, claiming rule changes and pitch conditions in the modern game favour batsmen over fast bowlers.

"Cricket should be about fast bowlers, not batsmen," he said. "Spectators like to see fast bowlers running in, hurting people, and pitches that make batsmen struggle for runs.

"But now we play on good batting tracks all the time, they've made laws about bouncers and free hits for a no-ball."

And it has emerged the Pakistan Cricket Board will refer Shoaib's comments to the "to the Disciplinary Committee for action under the Players Code of Conduct as contained in the Players contract".

A statement added: "The PCB is committed to a zero tolerance policy regarding indiscipline."
