England ponder World Cup options

Michael Vaughan is expected to be named captain of England's World Cup squad
Vaughan is set to take charge despite a nightmare run of injuries
England announce their 15-man World Cup squad on Wednesday with the selectors likely to pick most of the players who stunned Australia in the tri-series.

Michael Vaughan is expected to be named captain despite missing most of the one-dayers with hamstring problems.

Batsman Kevin Pietersen and pacemen James Anderson and Jon Lewis are also in line for places after injury.

But veteran seamer Darren Gough's hopes of a call-up appear to have receded following England's finals victory.

Durham youngster Liam Plunkett impressed and with Anderson and Lewis regarded as the first-choice new-ball pair, 36-year-old Gough is set to be overlooked.

Former England captain Graham Gooch told BBC Sport: "There's merit in including someone with his experience and record.

"There could be a place for someone like him who can bowl at the end, probably the best 'death' bowler in one-day cricket England have got available.

"I think it's a long shot but obviously he's hopeful."

Gough's Essex colleague Ravi Bopara appears to be competing with aggressive opener Mal Loye for a spot, while one of the few areas for debate could be a choice between young seamers Stuart Broad and Sajid Mahmood.

His injury situation is a concern but it's a risk worth taking

Gooch thinks England should risk the injury-prone Vaughan as skipper but he does have some reservations.

"He's vital to the team in as much that he calls the game very well, he gets the best out of the players, he understands all the players and their abilities and I think he's worth his place on that," Gooch added.

"His injury situation is a concern - can he last the World Cup - and it would be a disaster if he broke down during the matches.

"Secondly, and probably more importantly, is his form. It's not been good and he's been out for a long while.

"He's going to have to bat at the top of the order if he plays but I think it's a risk worth taking."

Possible England squad: Vaughan (capt), Bopara or Loye, Joyce, Bell, Pietersen, Strauss, Collingwood, Flintoff, Nixon, Dalrymple, Plunkett, Anderson, Broad or Mahmood, Lewis, Panesar.
