England lost Ed Joyce in the third over of their World Cup warm-up match against Bermuda in St Vincent after Andrew Strauss was omitted.
The left-handed Joyce was bowled by a gentle yorker from opening bowler Kevin Hurdle after hitting one boundary in a 12-ball innings of seven.
England elected to open with him and fit-again captain Michael Vaughan.
Strauss, 30 on Friday, had played 74 successive ODIs for England, but endured some poor form in Australia.
Ravi Bopara was the other member of the 15-man squad to miss out, with all four seamers fit to stake their claims.
Vaughan chose to bat first at the Arnos Vale ground, with this and Friday's game against Australia a 13-a-side clash.
Strauss has scored only two centuries in his ODI career, the last of which came against Bangladesh in 2005.
He scored successive fifties in the home series against Pakistan last summer, and did the same in the ill-fated ICC Trophy campaign in India.
However, the left-hander looked out of sorts down under following an Ashes campaign in which he scored under 10 only once but 50 only once.
