New Zealand all-rounder Craig McMillan is a major doubt for their World Cup match with England on Friday after injuring his toe in net practice.

He was hit by a yorker from fast bowler Shane Bond and taken to hospital for an X-ray which revealed severe bruising.

A team spokesman said McMillan's hopes of playing in the crucial Group C clash were in serious jeopardy.

The 30-year-old McMillan has scored 4,479 runs and taken 46 wickets in 187 one-day internationals.

The Black Caps were already missing fast bowler Mark Gillespie (virus), while all-rounder Jacob Oram and batsman Peter Fulton are both nursing broken fingers.

Also on Wednesday, England pace bowler James Anderson broke the small finger of his right bowling hand and is a doubt for the match.

McMillan hit form during the recent Chappell-Hadlee series against Australia, scoring 117 in the final game in Hamilton and 52 in the second game in Auckland.
