Woolmer death inquiry continues

The cause of Woolmer's death is not yet known
The investigation into the sudden death of Pakistan coach and ex-England Test player Bob Woolmer is continuing.

Woolmer, 58, died in hospital on Sunday after being found unconscious in his hotel room the day after Pakistan were knocked out of the World Cup.

A post mortem is expected to be carried out within the next 24 hours to ascertain the cause of death.

Woolmer was a known diabetic and there were reports he had recently complained of breathing difficulties.

His family claim he had been suffering from stress and believe this may have brought on a heart attack.

Jamaica police deputy commissioner Mark Shields said Woolmer's widow Gill had given permission for the post mortem.

He said as the death was unexplained it was being treated as suspicious.

"We would always treat any sudden death - even in the UK - as suspicious until we can prove otherwise," Shields added.

Pakistan cannot qualify for the next round of the World Cup, having lost to West Indies and Ireland, but they play their final group match against Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, who will retire from one-day cricket after the match, said he was still coming to terms with Woolmer's untimely death.

"It is very sad. Winning and losing is a part of the game but, after this news, everybody is shocked because he was a good coach and a much better human being," Inzamam said.

Flags flew at half mast at Monday's World Cup matches and there was a minute's silence at both games in memory of Woolmer.
