Dravid repeats backing for Sehwag

India captain Rahul Dravid
Any 11 we put on the park should be able to win a match for India
Rahul Dravid
India captain Rahul Dravid has urged critics of out-of-form batsman Virender Sehwag to get off his back.

Sehwag made 28 and nought in their two World Cup warm-up games but Dravid believes he will come good eventually.

"I get these questions all the time about supporting Sehwag, and I wonder is it some old Joe I am supporting.

"The guy had done well in international cricket and people just need to hang back a little bit and let him play some cricket," Dravid commented.

"Whenever any player is not in form, it is an issue to deal with. It could be Sehwag, it could be any of us, but that's what a squad is all about.

"We have 15 players, and you hope that someone else steps up to the plate and does the job for you."

He continued: "This is why we have spoken so much about believing that any 11 we put on the park should be able to win a match for India.

"This is what I truly believe - we have 15 players in the West Indies, whatever their names, that we can pick an 11 from for India that can win against any team."

India, the beaten finalists four years ago, are in confident mood after thrashing Cup hosts by West Indies by nine wickets in Jamaica.

And Sehwag's third-ball dismissal was offset by another good innings from the rapidly maturing Robin Uthappa, who is in contention to open the batting in their opening group game against Bangladesh next Saturday.

"We have the option of four guys who can open the batting. Sourav Ganguly, Sehwag, Robin Uthappa and Sachin Tendulkar - they have all opened the batting, and some have done it for longer than others," said Dravid.

"We have the options, and we just have to see who is in form, who is playing well, what the combination of the team is, and what the pitches are like before we decide what is the best combination for the side at the time.

"It's nice to have some flexibility and people who can bat in various positions for us, but our plans have always been dependent on what is the situation."
