Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene feels his side are capable of winning the World Cup for a second time.

The 1996 winners kick-off their 2007 campaign against minnows Bermuda on Thursday in their group B opener.

"We believe we have the team that can go the whole distance - we have several exciting combinations," he said.

Bermuda's line-up is likely to include Glamorgan captain David Hemp, who is the only professional in the side, which comprises teachers and policemen.

Portly spinner Dwayne Leverock captured the wickets of Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood in a warm-up game against England.

Also likely to feature is 17-year-old batsman Malachi Jones, who will be one of the youngest players to feature in a World Cup.

Bermuda qualified for the tournament by finishing fourth in the ICC Trophy, and captain Irvine Romaine says they are just seeking "to earn respect of the cricketing world".

20 years on and one of these minor cricket nations might win a World Cup

But with Sri Lanka themselves only joining cricket's elite around 25 years ago, Jayawardene insists that the ICC is right to allow associate member nations to take their chance.

"Playing against the top teams is the only way for these nations to improve," the batsman insisted.

"Like Sri Lanka, 20 years on and one of these minor cricket nations might win a World Cup."

Romaine acknowledges the selection difficulties his side face when ranged against the bigger cricketing nations.

"The whole country of Bermuda could fit in one of the stadiums in India, as the island consists of 60,000 people," he said.

"Our pool to choose from for the World Cup really consisted of 30-35 quality people who can compete at this level.

"But the guys are here to play good cricket and to represent their country well."

The other two teams in Group B, India and Bangladesh, meet on Saturday.
