Break will help 'jaded' Ireland

Ireland coach Adrian Birrell is hoping a six-day break will help his side recharge their batteries for the World Cup game against New Zealand on Monday.

Birrell said that his players looked "a bit jaded" against South Africa despite their battling display in Tuesday's seven-wicket defeat.

"The constant cricket is taking its toll on them," said Birrell.

"We have been pushing them hard in practice and I think that they need to recharge before we play our next game."

However, the South African does not believe the fact that 12 of the players in his squad are amateur should affect them over the long haul.

"We've had hot-weather training. Between our team and the professionals there wouldn't be a huge difference in fitness levels," he said.

Birrell is proud of what Ireland have achieved in the tournament - and although he will not be around after the World Cup he is confident the players can continue to do their country proud.

New Zealand is another big game for us because they're on fire as well
Ireland captain Trent Johnston
"We'll take a couple of days off and prepare for four days before the game.

He added: "We have a committed bunch of players, some of whom will form the nucleus of our squad for a long time to come.

"They are young and willing to learn and I am sure, Irish cricket can only benefit and improve from here."

His position will be filled by former West Indies opening batsman Phil Simmons, who has been with the team throughout the tournament.

Ireland, who have lost both Super 8 matches to date after surprisingly qualifying, will take on New Zealand in Guyana on Monday.

Captain Trent Johnston was proud of his side's showing in their seven-wicket loss to South Africa and predicted New Zealand would not find it easy-going either.

"We came close to the number one ranked team in the world. It was another huge performance from a team of amateurs who give everything they've got," he said.

"New Zealand is another big game for us because they're on fire as well but it's just another chance for us to pit ourselves against the world's best."
