Windies confirm Ganga as skipper

West Indies have confirmed that Daren Ganga will captain the side for the final two Tests against England.

The 28-year-old Trinidadian, who has captained West Indies A, took over when Ramnaresh Sarwan was injured at Leeds.

"He is a confident individual and we expect him to do well leading the team," said media spokesman Imran Khan.

Sarwan was ruled out for the rest of the tour after damaging his shoulder in the second Test, which the Windies lost by an innings and 283 runs.

Former skipper Shiv Chanderpaul missed that game but is expected to return for the third Test, starting on Thursday.

Chanderpaul, a veteran of 102 Tests and with a batting average of 44, has recovered from tendinitis in his knee.

And his support will be crucial if Ganga is to turn the team's fortunes round.

"Morale is very good. Several journalists who were at our practice game at Durham commented that the team does not seem to be down and out and are keeping the atmosphere as high as they can," Khan commented.

"The team had a few meetings after the Headingley Test match to discuss where things went wrong, and they are committed to ensuring they do better at Old Trafford."

Khan added that there was no significance in Ganga's appointment for the Tests only.

"The one-day squad has not yet been selected, neither has the Twenty20 squad, so there hasn't been any [captaincy] appointment for those yet," he explained.
