Borde to manage India in England

Former Test batsman Chandu Borde will manage India on the tour of Ireland and England while the board (BCCI) resumes its search for a new full-time coach.

Borde, 72, who played 55 Tests and was once chief selector, takes over after Ravi Shastri, who looked after the team in Bangladesh, said he was unavailable.

Graham Ford rejected an offer on Monday to succeed Greg Chappell and the BCCI ruled out John Emburey on Tuesday.

India's first match is a one-day game against Ireland in Belfast on 23 June.

Borde is coming out of retirement to perform a role he carried out on a tour of Pakistan in 1989-90.

He will work with two other ex-Test players, Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh, who will be the bowling and fielding coaches after they were given new one-year contracts.

India have been looking for a permanent head coach since Australian Greg Chappell quit in April after India's first-round exit from the World Cup.

Ford, who was offered a one-year deal with the possibility of a further two years, said he wanted to continue his work with English county side Kent.

Middlesex director of cricket John Emburey was interviewed for the top job on Saturday but BCCI treasurer N Srinivasan said he would not be contacted again.

"The board will now start its search again," Srinivasan added.

Shastri, meanwhile, said he could not continue in his interim role because of his media commitments.
