Jones targets England tour place

Kent wicket-keeper Geraint Jones refuses to accept his England career is over despite Matt Prior's success in the current series against West Indies.

Jones lost his place during the Ashes tour to Australia, primarily because of his poor form with the bat.

But he made an unbeaten 106 in Kent's last Championship game against Surrey.

"Realistically I have to look at a place on a winter tour and that will come about if I continue to score runs," he told BBC Radio Kent.

The 30 year-old has played 34 Tests and 49 one-day internationals.

But he was pushed down the pecking order when Prior became the first England keeper in history to score a century in his debut Test when he made 126 not out against West Indies at Lord's last month.

Despite that, Jones has drawn encouragement about his own future from an early season chat with chairman of selectors David Graveney.

"Grav popped down early in the summer and gave me the standard line about 'Go back to county cricket, score your runs and your name's in the frame'.

"That's something I've taken heart from - and the fact that I haven't been dismissed totally," Jones added.
