Third Test, Cape Town, day three (close): South Africa 373 v India 414
Scorecard
India secured a 41-run first innings lead after bowling out South Africa for 373 on day three of the deciding Test.
Resuming on 144-1, skipper Graeme Smith was the first wicket to fall, well held at short mid-on six short of a century.
Three overs later Hashim Amla edged wildly, and after Jaques Kallis and Ashwell Prince shared a watchful 83 in 38 overs both fell in successive overs.
Mark Boucher hit the fourth 50 of the innings but Anil Kumble took the last wickets with the day's final two balls.
Smith appeared set for his first Test century since April 2005 when he moved into the 90s with successive drives through mid-on against left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan.
However, he tried to force the pace against Anil Kumble bowling around the wicket into the rough, did not properly time the stroke and was well caught by a diving Virender Sehwag.
After Amla's injudicious departure, Kallis and Prince could only add 29 in the following 17 overs to the lunch break.
Kallis took almost three hours to make his 54, which ended when he tried to sweep Sachin Tendulkar and holed out to deep mid-wicket, giving India's batting maestro his 38th Test scalp.
The more conventional source of success for India soon accounted for Prince, when Kumble enticed some inward turn, leading to an inside edge into the stumps.
Occasional spin then paid further dividends for India when Sehwag, who along with Tendulkar turned some deliveries quite prodigiously, was awarded a fortuitous wicket, with the ball appearing to touch the thigh pad, but not the bat or pad, of an incensed Gibbs.
